EAR Specialized organ for hearing in animals. A sensitive membrane (tympanic membrane) vibrates in sympathy with sound waves. Vibration is transformed into electrical impulses, which are interpreted by the brain.
EAR CANAL In the ear it is the canal stretching from the Pinna to the Eardrum. Also called the Auditory Meatus.
EAR DRUM Located at the end of the Ear Canal, it is a stretched membrane attached to the Ossicles of the middle ear. Also called the Tympanic Membrane.
EARTH LOOP Connection of an electrical conductor to the earth
EBU European Broadcasting Union. Headquartered in Geneva CH and with its technical centre in Brussels BE, the EBU is an association of European and world broadcasters, which also provides programming to its members, including the Eurovision Network.
ECHO A delayed reflection of sound perceived by the ear as a separate sound.
ECHOGRAM A record of the very early reverberation decay of sound in a room.
EDL Edit Decision List. A list of instructions used to control editing processes with time code.
EDITING The process of adapting, revising and rearranging.
EES Early Early Sound. Since sound travels faster through a denser material, structure borne sound may reach the microphone in a room before the air-borne sound.
EEPROM Electrically-Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. A non-volatile but electrically alterable form of semiconductor storage.
EFC Energy-Frequency Curve.
EFTC Energy Frequency Time Curve.
EIGENTONES
EIN Equivalent Input Noise.
ELECTROMAGNETIC TRANSDUCER

ENTROPY It indicates the useful information in a signal.
EPROM Electrically Programmable Read-Only Memory. A non-volatile, electrically-write-once semiconductor storage device.
EQ (Equalization). The process of isolating, and cutting or raising the signal strength of frequency bands within a sound.
EQUAL LOUDNESS CONTOURS A contour plotting equal loudness through the audio spectrum. The contour with 40 dB sound pressure level is called the 40 Phoncontour.
EQUAL TEMPERAMENT Tuning process evolved in the 18th century. Particularly striking in keyboard development because it allowed keyboard instruments to play in all keys for the first time.

EXPANDER
EXPOSITION First section of a creative composition. The term originates from sonata form but is now used more generally to describe and opening section where the material is first exposed. See also sonata form.
EUSTACHIAN TUBE Located in the middle ear, this tube runs into the pharynx in your mouth. It equalizes the atmospheric pressure of the middle ear and can also be a liquid drain in case of an ear infection.
EXTERNAL MEATUS The ear canal that terminates at the eardrum. |
