GAIN The increase in Current, Voltage or Power level that an amplifier has introduced in a signal.
GALOIS FIELD A mathematical entity on which Reed-Solomon coding is based
GAMMA-FERRIC OXIDE Common coating used in magnetic tape. It is a special type of purified rust (ferric oxide).
GAP EFFECT (in tape heads) The effect the gap in the tape heads has on record and playback frequency response. This is because at certain high frequencies the physical size of the gap will match the signal's wavelength.
GENERAL MIDI or GM MIDI Standard. Common standard that defines a program change voice set.
GENLOCK The synchronization of a piece of video equipment by means of an external video signal.
GIBB'S PHENOMENON A ripple in frequency response cause by shortcomings of digital filters
GIF Graphics Interchange Format. A graphics format used for compressing stored images.
GLISSANDO A continuous sliding up or down a scale. Glissando is used as a score direction, on instruments such as piano, trombone and clarinet. A glissando usually takes place over a wide range of pitches. See also portamento.
