Number of bits that separate two words.


HARD DISK

A magnetic storage device. It utilizes a magnetic head to read and write data onto vacuum-sealed disks.

HARMONIC DISTORTION
The presence of harmonics in the output signal of a device, which were not present in the input signal.


HARMONICS

The name for all the simple sine waves that make up a complex tone. The first harmonic is called the Fundamental and has the same frequency as the tone in question; the second harmonic has a frequency twice the fundamentals and so forth. Also called Partials.

HARMONY
A way of analysing and writing music according to vertical or chordal considerations, as opposed to linear (contrapuntal) considerations.

HEADPHONES

Refers to miniature audio speaker system, usually stereo, which is designed for close listening. The speakers sit over the ears of the listener.

HEADROOM
The area between normal operating level and distortion.

The process of transducing acoustic pressure variations into nerve signals that can be interpreted by the brain.

HEARING LOSS
The loss of sensitivity of the auditory system, measured in dB below a standard level. Can be related to age or to exposure to high-level sounds.

HERTZ
The unit of measure of frequency. Hz.

HELICOTREMA
A small opening at the apex of the basilar membrane.

An electrical filter allowing only frequencies above a determined cut-off frequency through untenanted.

A type of noise. It is caused by random electrical fluctuations.

An acoustic transformer. The shape of the loudspeaker helps us match the air impedance in its different areas thus improving acoustic efficiency.
