I

IC
Integrated circuit.

IEEE

Institute of Electrical Engineers (UK)

IEEE

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (USA) (formerly IRE, Institute of Radio Engineers).

IM

Intermodulation Distortion

IMPEDANCE

A measure of the resistance to the flow of electrical or acoustic energy. In electronics, it is measured in Ohms.

IMPEDANCE MATCHING
When one device's output impedance matches the input impedance of a device it is connected to, maximum power transfer is achieved.

IMPULSE
A very short, transient, electric or acoustical signal

INDUCTANCE

The electrical characteristic exhibited by coils (inductors). It introduces an opposition to the change in current due to the rise of a magnetic field. Measured in Henrys (H).

INDUCTOR
An electronic component that exhibits Inductance

INITIAL TIME DELAY GAP
The time gap between the arrival of the direct sound and the first sound reflected from the surfaces of the room

INITIALISE
The process of resetting a device to its factory settings (i.e. the settings it had when you first used it).

IN PHASE

Said of two, periodic waves whose peak and zero levels are reached at the same time.

INTERFACE
A device that will allow two pieces of equipment to communicate with each other. For example, a MIDI interface will allow a computer to communicate with an external MIDI device such as a sampler or a keyboard.

INTERFERANCE
1. A wave property. The combining of two or more waves can cause constructive or destructive interference, depending on their relative phases. 2. Term used to indicate unwanted signals.

INTENSITY
The rate of acoustical energy transfer per unit area. (see Sound intensity Level SIL).

INTERLEAVING
The process of reordering data on a recoding medium to reduce the effect of defects.

INTERMODULATION DISTORTION

Two or more signals interacting with each other will cause non-harmonically related distortion components.

INTERPOLATION
The process of replacing missing sample data with the average value of adjacent samples

INVERSE SQUARE LAW

In Free Space, sound emanated by a Point Source radiated spherically, hence its Power or Intensity is inversely proportional to the radius of the sphere. (Also known as Spherical Divergence).

INTERVAL
Western music term describing the relationship between two pitches.

IP - INTERNET PROTOCOL
Packet transmission standard for the transmission of data, voice, video and other information over the Internet.

IPS
Inches per Second. Term used to describe tape speed.

IRQ
Interrupt Request. An integral part of the operating system of a computer. It is the method a device will use to queue for the attention of the processor.

ISA

Industry Standard Architecture. A standardised architecture for PCs, it replaces the 8-bit bus with a 16-bit bus.

ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network, see also BRI and PRI. A switched digital service using at 16 Kbps "D" channel for signalling and two or more "B" channels for signal data transmission.

ISO

International Standards Organization (Geneva, CH).

ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL
Special type of alcohol that is used to clean and degrease studio equipment such as tape machine recording heads and jackfield connections.

ITD

Initial Time Delay gap.
