LCD Liquid Crystal Display. A very low-power device capable of displaying characters words and symbols
LCRS Left, Centre, Right and Surround. Multi channel sound format used in film. Dolby Stereo is the format used for cinema theatres while Dolby Surround is the domestic version.
LED Solid State lamp
LEDE Live End Dead End. A method of acoustically treating a room, by making one end absorbent and the other end reflective and diffusive.
LEGATO Lit. Used as a score direction in Western stave notation; directs the player to play a phrase smoothly, with one note gliding into the next.
LEVEL Usually refers to the signal strength.
LFO Low Frequency Oscillator.
LIMITER A special type of compressor. It has a very fast attack and infinite compression ratio. This allows the device to stop the output level from exceeding an adjustable preset level.
LINEAR A system in which doubling one element (the cause) doubles the other (the effect).
LINE-UP TONE
LINE LEVEL SIGNAL Term used to indicate the medium amplitude signal levels output by devices such as synths, preamps and mixers. see Standard Signal Levels
LINE SPECTRA
LOCAL ON/OFF A control that allows the keyboard and the sound generating module of a device to be separated.
LOCKING SYNCHRONISERS
LOGARITHM The logarithm of a number is the power that another, fixed number (called the base and usually 10), needs to be raised to obtain the number in question.
LONGITUDINAL WAVES Waves whose vibrations oscillate back and forth in the direction of propagation of the wave
LOOP Term coined from analogue audio work, where two ends of analogue tape are physically joined together, thus forming a loop. Now used to describe any repeating sample.
LOUDNESS An exoression of the subjective experience of a Sound Pressure Level.
LOUDNESS PERCEPTION
LOUDSPEAKER An electro acoustic transducer employed to convert electrical energy into acoustical energy.
LOW BIT RATE AUDIO ENCODING
LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR - LFO An oscillator circuit that operates at low frequencies, usually below 20 Hz. LFOs are often used as modulators, i.e. a parameter of another signal will be modulated by the changing amplitude of the signal generated by the LFO. Usual waveform generated are Sine, Square,Sawtooth and Triangular.
LOW PASS FILTER A electrical filter allowing only frequencies below a determined cut-off frequency through untenanted.
LP RECORD The microgroove LP record was first introduced in the 1950
