LCD
Liquid Crystal Display. A very low-power device capable of displaying characters words and symbols


LCRS

Left, Centre, Right and Surround. Multi channel sound format used in film. Dolby Stereo is the format used for cinema theatres while Dolby Surround is the domestic version.

LED
Solid State lamp

LEDE
Live End Dead End. A method of acoustically treating a room, by making one end absorbent and the other end reflective and diffusive.  

LEGATO

Lit. Used as a score direction in Western stave notation; directs the player to play a phrase smoothly, with one note gliding into the next.

LEVEL
Usually refers to the signal strength.

LFO
Low Frequency Oscillator.

LIMITER
A special type of compressor. It has a very fast attack and infinite compression ratio. This allows the device to stop the output level from exceeding an adjustable preset level.

LINEAR
A system in which doubling one element (the cause) doubles the other (the effect).

LINE-UP TONE

LINE LEVEL SIGNAL
Term used to indicate the medium amplitude signal levels output by devices such as synths, preamps and mixers. see Standard Signal Levels

LINE SPECTRA

LOCAL ON/OFF
A control that allows the keyboard and the sound generating module of a device to be separated.

LOGARITHM
The logarithm of a number is the power that another, fixed number (called the base and usually 10), needs to be raised to obtain the number in question.

LONGITUDINAL WAVES
Waves whose vibrations oscillate back and forth in the direction of propagation of the wave

LOOP

Term coined from analogue audio work, where two ends of analogue tape are physically joined together, thus forming a loop. Now used to describe any repeating sample.

An exoression of the subjective experience of a Sound Pressure Level.

LOW BIT RATE AUDIO ENCODING

LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR - LFO
An oscillator circuit that operates at low frequencies, usually below 20 Hz. LFOs are often used as modulators, i.e. a parameter of another signal will be modulated by the changing amplitude of the signal generated by the LFO. Usual waveform generated are Sine, Square,Sawtooth and Triangular.

LOW PASS FILTER
A electrical filter allowing only frequencies below a determined cut-off frequency through untenanted.
